About the station
South Wigston train station has been serving the Leicestershire town of South Wigston since it first opened in 1986, making it a relatively recent addition to the train lines operating in the midlands.
South Wigston station is on the Birmingham to Peterborough Line, meaning that South Wigston is connected to key midlands towns and cities. It is a small station with limited facilities – in fact, as the station is not staffed, passengers must buy their ticket from the conductor on the train. Purchasing your tickets on the train comes at no extra cost than if you purchased in advance, and passengers can choose from the full range of tickets – so no stressing ahead of your journey!
In the past, Wigston had three railway stations, the first of which opened in 1840 at the dawn of British railway. By 1968; however, British Rail had closed Wigston South, Wigston Magna, and Glen Parva, leaving Wigston with no train stations for almost 20 years. The South Wigston railway station we see today was opened in 1986 at a new site, nearby to the former Glen Parva station. Though there has been some discussion of constructing a car park to serve the train station, there has been no progress on this matter as there is a wildlife haven adjacent to the station. There is, however, a car park nearby, which passengers may use when travelling by train.
South Wigston station solely operates services on CrossCountry routes, with trains running between Birmingham and Peterborough. Popular routes include Leicester to South Wigston, Peterborough to South Wigston, Birmingham to South Wigston, Nuneaton to South Wigston, and Ely to South Wigston.
