About the station
Sheffield train station is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1870 at the height of the steel revolution, the station – previously known as Pond Street – has undergone decades of redesign and renovation to become what it is today. Sheffield station is one of the busiest outside of London, serving popular routes such as Sheffield to Birmingham, Sheffield to York, Sheffield to Newcastle, Sheffield to Bristol, and Sheffield to Exeter.
Things to do in Sheffield
Sheffield is the largest city in South Yorkshire, and a hub of history and culture. It’s known as the ‘Steel City’ due to its production of the metal in the 19th century, but Sheffield is anything but industrial. Recent renovations have seen it transform into a true university city, with fantastic places to eat, drink, and go out. Two giant football clubs and an eclectic range of activities to partake in attract visitors from all over the UK.
With a rich and diverse history, there’s so much you can learn about Sheffield in a day. Weston Park Museum is one of the city’s most-visited attractions, with an extensive range of collections. In it, you can uncover the ‘Steel City’s’ social and natural history, as well as how it impacted the rest of the world. If you love a good show, visit Sheffield Theatres – comprised of three theatres, it’s the largest theatre complex outside of London. If the weather plays ball, discover the great outdoors with the city’s wide array of parks, or visit the Peak District nearby.
Shopping doesn’t get much better than Sheffield’s diverse range of malls, markets, and independents. Meadowhall is Europe’s largest shopping centre and home to all your favourite retailers and chains. Think Pandora, Primark, and TK Maxx with a dose of Wagamama and Pizza Express in between shops. Discover handmade local products at the Devonshire Quarter, with more independents at the Antiques Quarter. If you prefer high-street shopping, explore the Moor or Fargate in the city centre.
If, like us, you love your food, you’ll find comfort in Sheffield’s cuisine scene. For some of the best Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Turkish, and Japanese restaurants in the UK, visit Sheffield’s London Road. The city offers your recognisable chains, but why not try something a little bit different? Head to Sheffield’s artisan cafes and coffee houses or discover mouth-watering street food and quirky restaurants. The ‘Steel City’ is known as the home of the craft beer revolution, so be sure to try a pub or two.
