About the station
The Motherwell railway station has been serving the Scottish town of Motherwell for well over 150 years. But the town has seen various incarnations of the railway station in several locations during that time. The first station in Motherwell opened in 1843, located at Orbiston. Later, a decision was made to relocate the primary train station closer to Motherwell town centre, which was rapidly growing at the time. This decision reflected the needs of the town and its inhabitants and made train travel more easily accessible for those living in Motherwell at the time.
Following this decision, an updated, more modern Motherwell station was opened in 1885 in the heart of the town. There was a major refurbishment operation to the station in the 1970s when British Rail rebuilt a new station on the same site. This rebuilding project occurred at the same moment as the complete electrification of the West Coast Main Line in 1974. The station we see today has four through platforms and two overbridges, with the main building being above platforms 2 and 3.
Motherwell is situated not far from Glasgow, in the centre of Scotland, and is accessible on a variety of routes from across Scotland and the rest of the UK. With trains operated by CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, LNER, ScotRail and Transpennine Express. There are plenty of routes available to get you into the heart of Motherwell with no stress. Popular CrossCountry routes include Birmingham to Motherwell, Leeds to Motherwell, Edinburgh to Motherwell, Truro to Motherwell, and Glasgow to Motherwell.
Things to do in Motherwell
Situated in the heart of Scotland, Motherwell has so much to offer. Whether you’re looking for adventure, a bit of retail therapy, a glimpse of Scottish heritage, or stunning natural beauty; you’ll find it all in Motherwell.
The first stop on your visit should be Strathclyde Country Park. Boasting gorgeous vistas of the Scottish landscape, including trails along the river Clyde and Strathclyde Loch. You can spend an entire day exploring the gorgeous natural environment and spotting wildlife. If you’re looking for something with a little more action Strathclyde has you covered – with music festivals regularly at the country park, water sport activities to get involved in and play areas for little kids who like running around.
Little and big kids alike will have a fantastic day at M&Ds theme park, which is a short distance from Strathclyde Country Park and not too far from the town centre. At Scotland’s premiere theme park, you can find all your favourite rides, with options for a range of heights and ages, arcades, theme park snacks, bowling, soft play, and much more! Treat the family to a day out at M&Ds theme park for the thrill of a lifetime.
For history buffs, or tourists looking to get involved with Scottish heritage, the Mother’s Well for which the town is named is a must-see destination. This ancient religious monument is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and represents an interesting part of Scottish religious history. Another great heritage spot is the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre, which houses fascinating exhibitions on Scotland’s history.
If you’d prefer to stay within Motherwell town centre, you’ll find plenty of high-street shops, independent boutiques, cafes, and restaurants to keep you entertained. Whether you’re a shopaholic or simply love having a spot of lunch with friends, you’ll be sure to enjoy an afternoon in Motherwell town centre.
