About the station

Morpeth train station has been serving the North East since 1847. It was opened at a key time for the British railway industry, which was growing at a rapid rate in the mid-19th century. Morpeth is a station on the East Coast Main Line, running between London and Edinburgh, and principally serves the market town of Morpeth, just north of Newcastle.

Originally opened by the Newcastle and Berwick Railway, Morpeth railway station was designed by Benjamin Green in the Scottish Baronial style, and still has these historic buildings today. There has been a significant reorganisation of the services running in and out of Morpeth station throughout its history. As the Blyth and Tyne Railway opened and shut new stations, passenger trains were discontinued on the line to Bedlington; however, local services to Newcastle have been consistent, along with freight services.

Since the turn of the millennium, Morpeth station has seen considerable refurbishment, redesign, and maintenance work. With the addition of self-service ticket machines, passengers can now collect pre-purchased tickets from Morpeth as well as purchasing tickets on the day. The renovations also saw the construction of waiting shelters, lifts for wheelchair and mobility-impaired visitors, and digital screens offering up-to-date information about services. Additionally, the main buildings have been refurbished to include a cafeteria and upgraded toilets, as well as an office space for local businesses. With preserved historic exteriors and upgraded interiors, Morpeth station is a conveniently set up train station.

Morpeth operates services on several train lines, with routes running all over the UK, including LNER, Lumo, Transpennine Express, Northern, and CrossCountry. Popular CrossCountry routes include Birmingham to Morpeth, Cheltenham to Morpeth, Newcastle to Morpeth, Edinburgh to Morpeth, and Plymouth to Morpeth.

At Morpeth train station, facilities include toilets including accessible toilets, lost property, CCTV, bicycle parking, and a car park which is open 24/7.

Things to do in Morpeth

Whether you’re coming from afar for a long weekend in Northumberland or looking for a local day out on the weekends and school holidays; there are plenty of ways to enjoy your time in Morpeth and the surrounding areas.

The first place on our list of things to do in Morpeth is a visit to Carlisle Park. Situated on the bank of the River Wansbeck, Carlisle Park is a gorgeous place to spend the day out in nature, playing games, and spotting wildlife. With an ancient woodland to explore, outdoor activities, like tennis and bowls, and picnic and play areas to spend quality time together. Carlisle Park is an ideal day out for the whole family and is just as beautiful with autumnal trees as with spring flowers. Only 0.3 miles away from the train station, it can even be the first stop on your adventure.

If you’re looking for a relaxed day shopping and sipping coffee, there are plenty of options in the town centre. Famous for its historic and current markets, Morpeth is a shopper’s paradise with traditional farmers markets, Sanderson Arcade, and high street favourites. Morpeth hosts weekly markets on Wednesdays along with monthly farmers markets and food markets, and even some special festive markets! With so many places to stop for lunch or a coffee afterwards, a market day in Morpeth is not to be missed!

Finally, why not explore the Grade I listed gardens at Belsay Hall and Gardens? This attraction boasts the biggest collection of rhododendrons in the country, as well as stunning winter and spring flower displays and year-round forest walks. With a historic house to explore as well, there is heritage and horticulture to be enjoyed at Belsay Hall! Be sure to stop into the Victorian Tearoom for a cup of tea or a spot of lunch (especially the local favourite – stotties!).
