Things to do in Liskeard
Liskeard is one of the oldest towns in Cornwall, it was well-established by 1086 and recorded in the Doomsday book.
Some of the towns’ traditions stretch back nearly this far. St Matthew’s Fair, which takes place in September or October each year, began in 1266. Other regular events in town include a pantomime each January and a summer Carnival which takes place in June.
If you prefer the history of buildings to traditions, then you should visit St. Martins parish church while you are here. Parts of this building date back to the 15th century, and it is the second largest parish church in Cornwall. The Guildhall, now a Grade II listed building and home to the Borough Council was built the same year as the station. Forresters Hall on Pike Street was built in 1896 and is now a local community centre.
The Victorian architecture is evident throughout the town too, and it is common to see original Victorian shopfronts as you walk the streets. Perhaps you will pass one if you follow one of the towns three commemorative leisure trails.
Outside the town there are more sights to explore. The Looe Valley Line, which opened at Liskeard in 1860, is a scenic railway through the countryside. It’s a perfect way to relax and enjoy the beautiful Cornish countryside. For a different perspective, visit the Carnglaze Caverns. They are the product of Cornwall’s only underground slate mine, and less than six miles away from the station.
There are lots more to find in Liskeard, from independent shops and cafés to popular chains. Plus with the Cornish countryside on your doorstep you will never be short of things to do.
We have created a dedicated ‘things to do’ page highlighting activities and destinations from across the country, so the inspiration for your next trip is only a click away.
