About the station
Doncaster train station was opened to freight transport at the height of the industrial revolution. Since its first journey in 1849, the station has undergone multiple redevelopments into what it is today. A 2005 renovation saw its integration with the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, while its 9 platforms, lifts, and mobile phone charging ports make it one of South Yorkshire’s finest railway stations. Despite this, it’s still retained its heritage as the home of some of the most famous locomotive brands of their time.
Things to do in Doncaster
It may not have the allure its neighbouring cities do, but Doncaster shouldn’t be discounted as a weekend destination. Its Victorian buildings and fascinating museums speak to a rich history that runs deep through the community. A bustling town centre, fantastic bars and restaurants, and buzzing nightlife mean there’s more to do in Doncaster than just a history tour, too.
Doncaster’s history means it offers plenty in the way of local culture. One of the town’s top attractions is Mansion House, where you can discover opulent Georgian rooms and see what life was like hundreds of years ago. Conisborough Castle takes you further back into a more austere time in history, while Doncaster Races attracts visitors from all over the country. If you’re after a more relaxing break, why not visit one of Doncaster’s many spas or wellness centres?
Considering its size, Doncaster’s shopping scene punches above its weight. Two outstanding shopping centres are within walking distance from the station, with Frenchgate Shopping Centre by far the largest. Home to 120 shops, Frenchgate is the place to find all your favourite chain stores and restaurants. Doncaster is famous for its markets, which are scattered around the city. The main market is located in and around the Corn Exchange, and is bursting with over 400 shops, stalls and stands selling all manner of local produce.
Doncaster has put a lot of effort into reinvigorating its culinary scene of late, and it’s worked wonders. The city is now brimming with trend bars and chic restaurants, giving it a modern status on par with neighbouring Sheffield. For a more traditional experience, visit Mansion House for one of its famous afternoon teas – who could say no to speciality tea and coffee, gourmet sandwiches, and freshly baked cakes? You’ll find everything you need close to Doncaster train station, from pan-Asian dining to classic pub grub.
