About the station
When York Station first opened in 1877, it was the largest train station in the world. While its 11 platforms can’t boast that accolade today, it’s still a vital junction that connects a huge portion of the UK. Sitting between London and Edinburgh, this historic city is an idealistic gateway between England’s capital and central Scotland. Its history and iconic glass roof make it one of the most stunning train stations in the UK.
CrossCountry services routes in and out of York from many of the UK’s biggest towns and cities, including York to Edinburgh, Doncaster to York, Birmingham to York, Glasgow to York, and Durham to York.
Things to do in York
A bundle of British culture and heritage, York is one of the UK’s oldest cities. Its cobbled streets and cute, narrow pathways tell the tale of the city’s rich history, while stunning architecture and bustling markets mean you’re never short of something to see and do. A train to York will give you access to quiet antique shops, traditional pubs, and fascinating museums – much of which can be explored in a day. This history seamlessly intertwines with hipster cafes and university bars, making it one of the most attractive cities in the UK.
From history to horse racing, culture has played a huge role in York’s success as a city. York Dungeons, the York Museum, and the York Art Gallery are all key sights to see if you’re interest in the city’s diverse history. If it’s a show you’re after, you won’t find many better than at The York Theatre Royal and The Grand Opera House. Alternatively, if it’s a night out you’re after, a quality university means there are plenty of bars and clubs scattered along York’s cobbled streets.
York’s shopping scene caters for all needs. Your favourite high street brands can be found dotted around the city, or you can head to York Designer Outlet for an indoor shopping experience. The city has an unrivalled collection of independent stores, tucked around every street corner. Discover second-hand charity shops, fashion boutiques, and hand-crafted jewellery shops wherever you walk. Retro shops can be found in abundance – whether you’re searching for clothes, books, or jewellery, you’re bound to find something in York.
If you’re a chocaholic, you’ve no doubt heard of York’s history with the cocoa bean. Home to Terry’s, the city has a proud history of chocolate making, which you can learn about in one of the many sweet and chocolate shops it’s home to. Cafes play a huge part in York’s food and drink scene, and there’s nothing better than relaxing at one of its traditional tearooms after a day of sightseeing. For an evening meal, you’ll find an array of multicultural cuisines on offer, from Nepali to Chinese.
