CrossCountry encourages a new generation of engineers

In July, CrossCountry wrapped up its work with educational organisation Primary Engineer, to encourage Devon children to consider a future in engineering.

At an event at Plymouth Argylle’s Home Park stadium, almost 50 children from nine local schools showcased their train designs and tested their performance in a series of challenges. These included understanding the mechanics of traction, braking and steering for both unpowered and electric model trains.

Alongside colleagues from Great Western Railway who also supported the event, CrossCountry’s Regional Director Bethan Jelfs and Fleet & Engineering Director Adrian Hugill helped judge the children’s efforts and hand out prizes.

This marks the third successful series of activities with Primary Engineer that CrossCountry has sponsored, following similar schemes at Oxford and Birmingham. The activities are built around an engineering curriculum for Early Years, Primary and Secondary students, to encourage their interest in STEM in their education and as a future career. More information on their work can be found at www.primaryengineer.com.
