About the station
Crewe Railway Station opened in 1837. Intended to become a hub between the largest cities in England, the station grew to become one of the most historically significant stations in the world. It’s fair to say that the town of Crewe, in Cheshire, would not be what it is today without the railway.
In the 1830s, Crewe was only a small village, but the arrival of the Grand Junction Railway in the latter part of the decade transformed the area. It began an association with world-class engineering that it proudly maintains to this day.
The railway facility of Crewe Works opened in 1840 and at its peak employed around 20,000 people. It produced many historical locomotives, such as the Bowen-Cooke Claughton and the Webb 2-4-0. Although a large part of the works was sold in the 1980s, Crewe’s reputation for engineering had been cemented by the arrival of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in 1946; and more recently by Bentley motors.
The name Crewe is derived from an old Welsh word meaning ‘crossing’, so it’s no surprise that today Crewe station continues its proud tradition as a part of railway history. It is still a major rail gateway to the northwest of the country.
Birmingham to Crewe is only a 50-minute journey, and Wolverhampton to Crewe is 30 minutes away. Crewe is also in easy reach of Cheltenham and Stoke-on-Trent. Making the town a perfect hub to explore this historic corner of the north-west.
Things to do in Crewe
Crewe station is less than a mile away from Crewe town centre, and the town is only 30 miles away from Manchester Airport.
If you’re interested in the railway history of the town, your first stop should be the Crewe Heritage Centre located nearby in the old LMS railway yard.
There’s more to the history and culture of Crewe than just the railways. Why not take a look at one of the nearby castles? Heighley Castle and Beeston Castle are both within a 30-minute drive.
There’s also the Bentley Motors Factory Tour where you can browse the Bentley cars collection and learn all about the heritage of this famous car maker.
Do you want to entertain the kids? Then the place for you is Funsters Play and Party Centre on Stalbridge Road. It could be just what you need to tire the little ones out and is only a short walk from the station.
Located on the edge of Cheshire, Crewe is also the perfect gateway to the north west of England, and the beautiful countryside of north Wales. Take a bus or drive for a scenic day out. If you prefer to stay in town, why not see how the Queens Park restoration is taking place? This is a half-million-pound project designed to restore the Grade I listed park to its former Victorian glory.
Back in the town centre, Crewe is home to a thriving live music scene. Check out one of the 677 seats at the Edwardian Lyceum Theatre on Heath Street for the latest shows, drama and pantomimes.
If you’re looking to pick up some tasty treats, you’re spoilt for choice between the Victoria Centre, The Market Shopping Centre or Dorothy Flude Retail Park. There’s also Crewe Market hall in the centre of town featuring a range of independent stores, and an outdoor market three days a week.
Book a trip to Crewe and see what else you can discover.
